What is the frenulum?
The frenulum (frenulum of the prepuce) is a thin, elastic band of tissue on the underside of the penis that connects the foreskin to the head. It helps pull the foreskin back over the glans and is rich in blood vessels and nerve endings, which makes it a sensitive area.
Symptoms of a short or tight frenulum (frenulum breve)
A frenulum that is too short or tight restricts how far the foreskin can retract and pulls on the glans. Common signs include:

A torn frenulum — what to do

What is frenuloplasty (and frenulectomy)?
Frenuloplasty is a minor surgery that lengthens or releases the tight band so the foreskin can retract normally and the tip no longer bends. Frenulectomy removes the problematic band entirely. Does a torn frenulum heal on its own, or does it need stitches?
Bleeding usually stops and a minor tear often heals on its own. However, it tends to tear again in the same place because the scar tissue becomes tighter. If it tears repeatedly or bleeds heavily, see a urologist for a permanent fix by cutting or lengthening the frenulum.
Will frenuloplasty reduce sensation?
The goal is to release the tight band that causes pain, not to remove the nerves that provide sensation. Most patients feel more comfortable afterward because the pain and fear of tearing are gone. The surgeon preserves as much tissue and blood supply as possible.
